Gareth Thomas, the former British Lions captain, has admitted being "anxious about people's reactions" after announcing that he is gay.

Thomas said he had been tormented by the issue, but the 35-year-old Cardiff Blues player said he did not want to be known as a "gay rugby player".

"I've been through all sorts of emotions with this, tears, anger and absolute despair," Thomas said. "I wasn't sure if I ever wanted to let people know and, to be honest, I feel anxious about people's reactions and the effect it might have on my family."

He added: "I don't want to be known as a gay rugby player. I am a rugby player first and foremost. I am a man. I just happen to be gay. It's irrelevant. What I choose to do when I close the door at home has nothing to do with what I have achieved in rugby."

Thomas, who has 100 international caps, captained Wales in 2005 to their first Grand Slam victory since 1978 and led the British Lions tour of New Zealand later that year.

Gay HOLLYWOOD

By Nhamo
Actor Colin Firth says that Hollywood is full of secretly gay actors because the movie industry forces stars to keep their true sexuality
Colin Firth
"hidden".

Firth, who plays a homosexual college professor in his new movie, 'A Single Man', insists that it's easy for a "straight" man to take on a gay part in a film. But Hollywood is a much more difficult place for a gay actor, because they are forced to stay 'in the closet' to survive in the film business, Parade magazine online reported.

"If you're a straight actor who takes on the role of a gay man, it's obviously not the same as being one in this business. I think there are still some constraints against being openly gay. It is to do with whatever sexual taboos are in place. In Hollywood, I know that some actors are far more circumspect about keeping that secret hidden. There are not a lot of openly gay leading men," the actor told the magazine.

Firth is not the only star speaking out about the subject of gay stars in Hollywood, fellow British actor Rupert Everett recently revealed he has been shut out of the movie business since he 'came out.'

Everett also claims there are many high profile gay actors who are forced to keep their true sexuality a secret in order to protect their careers.

Joe McElderry wins X Factor, watched by 20 million on TV

Joe McElderry wins The X Factor

Joe McElderry was crowned the winner of The X Factor tonight, in what is set to go down as the biggest night of television of the year.

Viewing figures published tomorrow are expected to show that a peak of nearly 20 million viewers tuned in to see McElderry, 18, overcome Olly Murs in the public vote, to become the sixth winner of the ITV talent show. More than 10 million votes were cast in the final during the weekend. The programme had already achieved its highest Saturday night audience when a peak of 14.5 million viewers tuned into the first half of the final, 54 per cent of the television audience.

McElderry, from South Shields, was the runaway favourite to land the title after a string of heartfelt performances, including a duet with George Michael. He said last night: “I never took much notice of all the hype because as soon as you do I think it can put you off. It was flattering, but just because everyone says you’re going to win doesn’t mean you are. But I’m thrilled. It’s amazing.”

The teenager had solid political backing, with both the Foreign and Culture secretaries coming out in support. David Miliband, McElderry’s local MP, wrote to the singer to wish him luck, while Ben Bradshaw was in the studio to cheer him on in person. Even Gordon Brown took time out from a surprise visit to Afghanistan to send a message of support.

McElderry will now sign a £1 million deal with Syco, the division of Sony Music run by Simon Cowell. He is virtually guaranteed the Christmas No 1 with his rendition of The Climb, an uplifting ballad originally recorded by Miley Cyrus, the American teen singer and actress.

After the Christmas single and a tour around Britain with the rest of The X Factor contestants, McElderry will record an album. In the first two series, the winner’s album was released early in the following year. But Mr Cowell said he would follow plans put in place for former winners Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke and hold back the album until the show returns.

He said: “What I’ve learnt over the past year is that you can’t make a decent album in less than seven or eight months, full stop. So whoever wins we will take much, much longer with the record and then release it at the time the show would normally return, round about September, October.”

Tonight’s show had an all-star cast, with performances from George Michael and Paul McCartney. Alexandra Burke and Leona Lewis also appeared.

A Single Man

By Editor

Fashion designer Tom Ford makes a stunning debut as a director with A Single Man, based on Christopher Isherwood's 1964 novel set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis.

A Single Man is the story of George Falconer, a 52 year old British college professor [Colin Firth] who is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner, Jim [Matthew Goode].

George dwells on the past and cannot see his future as we follow him through a single day, where a series of events and encounters, ultimately leads him to decide if there is a meaning to life after Jim. George is consoled by his closest friend Charley [Julianne Moore], a 48 year old beauty who is wrestling with her own questions about the future. A young student of George’s, Kenny [Nicholas Hoult], who is coming to terms with his true nature, stalks George as he feels in him a kindred spirit.

“A Single Man” is a romantic tale of love interrupted, the isolation that is an inherent part of the human condition, and ultimately the importance of the seemingly smaller moments in life.

The original novel is worth a read too.

Bob Dylan's Christmas Single

By Editor

This is the music video for Bob Dylan's song 'Must Be Santa' directed by Nash Edgerton. We love the track, but the video is a little strange and we have a few questions.

Is it just us or is Bob channeling Eric from True Blood?

Can anyone explain the chase/fight which breaks out toward the end?

Are any of the other people at the party famous, if so, who are they and for what are they known?

Your answers in the comments please, and the best win prizes!!!

HIV awareness ad starring Konnie Huq

Former UK Children's TV (Blue Peter) presenter Konnie Huq stars in this campaign by British Red Cross to raise HIV awareness and education.

The advert, produced by Red Bee Media, uses a very ordinary situation to drive home the point that what people know to be true about the risks of infection is not always bourne out by their behaviour toward those who are HIV+.

You can see the full ad here.
