Dutch Gay Dad Writes Children’s Book About Family
By Editor
A father, a second father, and
two children. Not exactly the standard family setting for a
children’s book. But it’s all part of everyday life for Arwen and
Wolf, the adopted children of a gay couple in the Dutch town of
Dordrecht. One of their fathers decided to write a children’s book
based on his own family situation: for his own children but also
for the rest of the world. "It’s a feel-good book about a happy
family."Dad is hopeless when it comes to putting beads in her braided hair, sighs four-year-old Arwen. But her adoptive father Jarko de Witte van Leeuwen knows plenty of mums who leave that job to the hairdresser as well.
The De Witte van Leeuwen household describe themselves as a happy family but certainly not an average one. Once same-sex marriage became legal in the Netherlands in 2001, Jarko (now 39) married his partner Jos. Soon afterwards, he applied to adopt a child. In 2005 they welcomed their adopted daughter Arwen into their home and last year she was joined by their adopted son Wolf: two African American kids with two white Dutch dads.

Are US Politicians Behind Ugandan Execution of HIV+ Men?
By Editor
The African nation of Uganda is weighing a
bill that would impose the death penalty on HIV positive men who
have committed what it calls "aggravated homosexuality."
As if that were not shocking enough, a U.S. author is claiming that a secretive group of American politicians appear to be a driving force in seeing the proposal become law.
Under current Ugandan law, homosexuality is a crime punishable by life in prison. The proposed law would not just condemn HIV positive gay men and "repeat offenders" to death, it would also jail for three years anyone who knows a gay man but refuses to report them to authorities.
American author, Jeff Sharlet, wrote a book called "The Family" which is an investigative look at a secretive group of fundamentalist Christian lawmakers in Washington, D.C. In a recent interview with NPR's Terry Gross, Sharlet broke the news that The Family's influence in Uganda is rife.

China's Homosexuals Struggle to Step out of the Closet
By Editor
One year after Wei
Xiaogang told his parents he is gay, his mother is still trying to
find him a wife. She still thinks he might change if he lived
with a woman. Although homosexuality has become largely socially accepted in many Western countries, it is still immensely complicated in China - it was only in 2001 that homosexuality ceased to be officially described as a mental illness.
Wei believes 3 to 5 percent of China's 1.3 billion people are homosexual, putting the actual number at more than 30 million. Today he is active in raising public awareness of homosexuality in China.

Exhibit Tells the Story of Nazi Persecution of Gays
By Editor
The William Way LGBT Community Center in
Philadelphia is telling one of the Holocaust's least-known stories
- the Nazi persecution of homosexuals.
It's a story of men and women who were arrested and often
sentenced to hard labor for what were called indecent acts. The
victims were mostly men. Some faced judicial proceedings and
criminal charges. Others were simply picked up by SS officers and
locked away in concentration camps.

California City Woos Gay Tourists
By Editor
West Hollywood —
where more than one-third of the population identifies as gay,
lesbian, bisexual or transgender — is well known to people in the
Los Angeles area and draws many visitors from around California.
But it's not a major national or international destination.
Now the city, eager to shore up revenue, wants to expand its
reach. And with good reason: Even in a slumping economy, gay and
lesbian tourists tend to wield more disposable income and are
more likely to spend on travel and leisure than heterosexual
tourists, studies have shown.
